New Year, Old Skool A Desmond Howl
Production
December 30, 2004
4:00 6:30 pm central time
A new year is of course a great time to look ahead to the future, but
Id rather linger on the past for a while. As we prepare to move on to a
new year, I took the opportunity to take a walk down memory lane, and
revisit some of the music that mattered most to me before I became the
old folkie that I sometimes seem to be today. My musical coming of age
came in the early 90s, and was largely a result of hearing much of the
music that was played on this very special broadcast.

Even Desmond Howl gets in the Christmas spirit once in a while, and so
we enjoyed a rare afternoon of Christmas favourites. Not all Christmas
music is cheesy, as we proved today.
Also, we finally caught up with Vancouver roots-rockers Swank, who
gathered around a speakerphone for a wild and entertaining interview.

The best of 2004 continues, as we planned to speak with a couple of
great acts that call BC home. It's always great to introduce Winnipeg to
great artists, and I'm so glad that we got to hear some of the great
music of Bruce Knauer and Swank. We were supposed to do interviews with
both, but those pesky time zones got in the way, and we got our wires a
bit crossed. I called Bruce and got him out of the shower to do an
interview, but Swank was MIA. We'll try again next week!

I always have fun doing this show, but rarely so much fun as I did
hanging out with two truly great people who play truly great music. I've
been a fan of Michael Johnston and Reid Jamieson on their own, but
seeing and hearing them perform together live is an experience unto
itself, and one that I won't soon forget. They came in for a set of
originals and fabulous covers and lots of fun.

A couple of interviews with a couple of guys who are planning a whole
string of shows in Winnipeg this upcoming week.
First up, Michael Johnston, who's from Toronto but wisely makes Winnipeg
his home now. He has a great new disc called "Curious Heart," and he
dropped by to share that with us, and discuss "Boys Play Girls," the
amazing fundraising event that he's hosted for the past couple of years.
Michael is also responsible for bringing to Winnipeg one of my favourite
new discoveries of 2004, Reid Jamieson. He'll be in town for shows
Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and as if he weren't going to
get enough of Winnipeg, he took time to chat on the phone with little
old me.

Seems like no shortage of amazing shows going on in Winnipeg these days.
Almost every night there's something I'm dying to see. And even though I
try to have interviews with some of my favourites coming to town each
time, I can't fit them all in. Would have loved to talk to Stephen
Fearing or Ken Whiteley, both of whom will be in town this week.
Instead, we were introduced to a couple of new favourites on the show.
In town tonight opening for Serena Ryder is a Winnipeg boy named Lindy.
He stopped by for a few live songs and some conversation. Almost a week
ago, I had the great pleasure of meeting and interviewing a very
promising young singer/songwriter named Charlie Mars, when he opened for
R.E.M. at The Concert Hall. We heard that brief chat on the show today.

Today a visit from Winnipeg's own JP Hoe. He's far too humble and modest
to admit it (right, JP? Hes telling me what to write.) but he's well on
his way to becoming a big star some day. His perfectly crafted pop songs
belong on radios everywhere. Truly a world class songwriter and
performer with a great attitude and an amazing voice.
The truth is, I keep inviting him on the show only so that when he
becomes a big rock star, I can make money selling these live appearances
on ebay!

For the most part, the same show that you know and love (I hope); new
releases, upcoming shows, the best shows of the past week, etc.
In the last half hour, however, one more valiant attempt at converting a
whole new crop of Rheostatics nerds. Can't wait to see that band again,
October 30 at The West End. Of course, some small-minded folks can't
wait 'til then because it means I'll stop playing so much Rheostatics on
the show. Small minds probably don't deserve to be enlightened, but I
try!

The Fred Eaglesmith "Will He or Won't He" Show
Listeners to this show know that one of my favourite singer/songwriters
of all time is undoubtedly Fred J
Eaglesmith. And he's a fascinating guy, too. So I've always wanted to
have a long talk with him and get
him on the show. Well, for one reason or another, whenever I've tried to
connect with Fred in the past, it
hasn't happened. This time, he was in Winnipeg on a Sunday, so I wasn't
about to let him get away so
easily. I thought I had it all lined up. But, did he or didn't he show?
Also on the program was a special live in-studio visit by American
singer/songwriter Josh Ritter. He's
currently on tour with Sarah Harmer, and he was nice enough to stop by
the studio to talk, perform live,
and play some songs from his great new album "Hello Starling."

There's a bountiful treasure of interviews waiting to behold, on this
International Talk Like a Pirate
Day, mateys.
First up, we set our sights on the good ship David Francey, who sails
these seas on Tuesday with his good
crew, Kevin Welch, Kieran Kane, and Fats Kaplan. That land lubber was
wantin' ta talk about his new CD,
The Waking Hour, too. Well worth following a treasure map for.
Next, we spotted some scurvy dogs setting sail for Winnipeg's muddy
waters tomorrow night. Carolyn Mark &
Ford Pier were aboard to wager a peace treaty. At ye old High & Lonesome
Club, they'll hitch their boat
and unload a big chest o' golden songs along with their crewmate Geoff
Berner.
Recently, our crew pillaged a bounty of new music, including CDs from
the likes of Mike Plume, Nathan
Wiley, Luke Doucet, Chuck Prophet, and more. We'll be crackin' a big
bottle o' rum and sharin' some
chanteys from them salty dogs, too.
Well, blow me down! If that ain't a richly rewarding sail on the good
ship TTBTGH, methinks I'll just have
to walk the plank!

This week, I'm all giddy with glee about being the cool kid on the block
with all of the hot new releases,
most of 'em before anyone else. Sometimes being a radio weasel has its
perks. But don't worry, Im not one
of those mean kids who picks on others who are less fortunate; no, in
fact I couldnt wait to share these
new releases with the listeners.
Last week we had hoped to hear from Kevin Welch to discuss his great new
album with Kieran Kane and his
work on the new David Francey CD, but it was not meant to be. This week,
we got our act together and
connected for a fascinating talk.

We were expecting a call from Kevin Welch to discuss his fantastic new

Well, just one more pre-recorded show for now, I promise. I'll be back
in the studio live next Sunday, but
this Sunday I have another great excuse for missing the show, the Regina
Folk Fest. I've told you all
about how great the lineup is, so you'll excuse me for not being here
live this week, especially after you
hear the show I've got planned out. It's a good one. Lots of great
music, of course.
One of our favourite bands around these parts is the mighty Nathan.
They've got a brand new record coming
out and it's a fine one. The CD release party will be on August 26 at
the West End. Looking forward to
that, we'll hear some brand new Nathan. In fact, we'll go back in time
to July 6, 2003, when Nathan was
live in the studio playing some brand new songs and chatting and having
fun. If you missed it the first
time 'round, you'll want to hear this. Even if you heard it, you'll want
to relive the memories. It was a
great show, I know you'll enjoy it.

What's this? Yet another pre-recorded show? Yup, this week I'm off in
Brandon checking out their great
folk festival and getting away from all of the things I have to do here.
But, the show must go on, and
I've got a lot planned for TTBTGH while I'm away.
I love telling you about upcoming and recent concerts in town, and there
are a TON to discuss this week.
Today's special guest interview is with a guy who's playing at the
Collective on Wednesday, a rockin'
young singer/songwriter from Victoria named Leeroy Stagger. He's an
interesting guy and has a great CD to
boot.
And, looking ahead to next week, what's that on the horizon, another
pre-record? Yup, next week I'm off to
that hot vacation spot, Regina to see their great folk festival. I'll
tell you what's in store in case you
want to call the travel agent and meet me at the resort.
Don't worry, I'll do another live show, someday.

about my excuse for missing the show, the great line-up of music in

Desmond Howls Canada Day Spectacular
July 1, 2004
2:00 6:30 pm central time
Its Canada Day, up Canada way and the timing was right for a
celebration. A celebration, of course, of
the greatest nation on the planet, but also a celebration of some of the
greatest music ever made. Im
indeed a proud Canadian, so perhaps Im a little biased, but the truth
remains that my favourite music of
all tends to come from this country. No other country can boast such an
impressive lineup of artists that
I love dearly. So, what better way to celebrate Canada Day than by
playing hours and hours of great
Canadian music.
It was also a perfect time for a little bit of nostalgic reflection, as
I celebrated my 3rd anniversary as
a show host on UMFM (for trivia buffs, I had been a behind the scenes
board operator for a few months
before that). On July 2nd, 2001, I hosted the first of Desmond Howls
Canada Day Spectaculars. As if that
werent reason enough for a little look back at the past, I officially
went over the hill this week, and
turned 30. Yippee.

Pretaped. Part 2 of the second annual Tell the Band to Go Home
Invitational Event. This weeks guests were
Stu Reid, host of CKUWs Twang Trust, and the new artistic director of
the West End Cultural Centre,
Dominic Lloyd. If anyone knows music, its these two guys, and they put
your humble host to shame with
their extensive knowledge this week. Good to have em on the show, but
glad they wont be back for a
while. They reveal me for the amateur that I really am, when theyre on
the show.

Pretaped. Part of the second annual Tell the Band to Go Home
Invitational Event, where I invite other
local music fans to come and program the show. This year, there were
twice as many weeks to pretape, so
more guests and more fun. I always learn a lot by inviting new people to
play songs on the show. Just when
I think I know just about everything about singer/songwriters, Im
humbled by the talents of my guests.
This week, I was off with my co-hosts on Steel Belted Free Range Radio
(www.steelbeltedradio.com) to see
Steve Forbert at Hughs Room in Toronto. What a road trip.
Meanwhile, back at the ranch, through the miracle of modern digital
recording, I was joined on the show by
Jenny Western, host of Hit the Big Wide Strum, Pal, CKUW 95.9 fms
weekly bluegrass program. Judging by
her appearance this week, she knows a heck of a lot more than just
bluegrass.

A bit of a mixed bag on the show today. First off, a cool new CD of love
songs called Sweetheart. Then, I
indulged myself with a little bit of upbeat, fun pop music to warm
things up on a miserably cold (but
beautifully sunny) Winnipeg winter afternoon.
My special guest today was Matthew Barber, a very promising up-and-comer
who was recently signed to Warner
Music Canada and is heading out on a tour that brings him to Winnipeg
Jan. 27.
Last, but certainly not least, a celebration of two wonderful years of
music. There are many benefits to
hosting a radio show, but the best one of all is getting to make some
really wonderful friends, which I've
been lucky enough to do with three very talented ladies from Winnipeg.
The Wailin' Jennys started out
innocently enough two years ago when they got together for a one-off
show at a tiny music store on January
18 and 19, 2002. Just before those concerts they made their first ever
public appearance on UMFM and I was
lucky enough to be a part of that program. Last year on January 19, they
came back for a wonderful 2 hours
of music to celebrate their first birthday as a group. This year,
they're very busy preparing for the
release of their forthcoming full length CD which will be released on
Jericho Beach Music soon.
Unfortunately, that meant that I had to have a birthday party for one,
but I hope that they took the time
to celebrate how far they've come in two years. Congratulations, my
friends, and here's to many more years
of making magic together.
