2:00-4:00 pm central time
There's really no choice but to listen to Christmas music on Christmas
Day. And usually, your choices range from the tired fare on commercial
radio or the tired fare on that cool fireplace channel on Shaw TV. But
what those options don't give you is a real person, playing really good
songs.
That's where we come in. 2 hours of fun and interesting music, with a
delicate mix of traditional songs and some more contemporary, fun ones.
It's our Christmas gift to the listeners!

2:00-4:00 pm central time
We start off on a somewhat sad note. It seems that one of my favourite
bands of all time, and without a doubt one of the reasons that I'm such
a huge music nerd today, The Lowest of the Low, is going on extended
hiatus again. They'll be sadly missed if this is the end, but their
amazing music will live on forever.
Bruce Cockburn's coming to town on Wednesday to accept a big award from
the Winnipeg Folk Festival, so we'll pay him some respect also by
playing some of his great music.
Then, I share music and stories from my amazing trip to Minneapolis,
where I got to see the amazing Rodney Crowell put on a show that I hope
I don't ever forget. I bought a whack of new CDs to share also, so a few
tunes from some of the many new goodies I picked up.

Another in the much-more-infrequent-than-it-should-be Tell the
Band to Go Home Invitational Series, where I turn the
programming duties over to someone so that I can sit back,
enjoy, and learn like everyone else. I love having new voices,
perspectives, and interests on the show from time to time, and
this show was particularly enlightening, as loyal listener and
good friend Oly Backstrom dropped by to tell us about Greg
Brown, Peter Case, Richard Thompson, and a few other artists he
thought we'd enjoy. And we did! He taught us a lot, but Im
going to have to teach him a thing or two about Can-Con, it
seems

Under the Covers
Sunday, October 30, 2005
2:00-4:00 pm central time
As the weather grows colder and my hectic schedule makes me feel
older, all I want to do some days is stay under the covers. I've
been to a few great concerts lately and have heard some great
cover versions, so on today's show, we heard some of the
originals that were redone so well lately, and played a bunch of
other great covers and songs that were covered. Two more hours
under the covers sounds pretty good to me.

Another pre-taped Tell the Band to
Go Home spectacular.
Music in remembrance of Sept. 11, in honour of Kristi's
birthday, and a special set of music recorded live on UMFM in
honour of the anniversary of the debut of Steel Belted Free
Range Radio.
We also revisit an interview with Willy Porter which was taped
just before the Winnipeg Folk Festival, but because of computer
problems and because most of us were at the festival, it's one
that not many people heard, so we'll give you another chance.
We end it off with a tribute to one of the greatest
singer/songwriters of them all. Sept. 12 marks the anniversary
of the day that the world lost Johnny Cash, so we played some
great Johnny & June in remembrance of them both.

Although I like to yak a lot on the radio and I tend to be
rather long-winded when writing, often I don't know quite what
to say about the world around me, so I love to let the music do
the talking. Today was a day to work through a few themes that
are on my mind, namely politics, natural disasters, hope/faith,
and work (it is Labour Day weekend and my summer job is over and
time to get back to reality next week.)

Local singer/songwriter Matt Epp stops by to chat about his new
record "You'll Find Me Alone," which will be released at The
West End on Sept. 1, and play us a few songs live.
I always love a new Ron Sexsmith record, but his new one,
"Destination Unknown", which is an album of beautiful harmony
duets with his longtime drummer Don Kerr, is so grand that it's
got me thinking about some other great harmonies and pulling out
some of the best for the show. Love them harmonies. Yup.

It's been a busy weekend. Moving day is today. My Mom "Lucy"
moves out of the house we've been in for 28 years. Man do we
have a lot of crap. In honour of the big day, a set of "house"
music.
What could I possibly say about my special guest on this show
that wouldn't sound like gushing? No sense in trying. She's a
legend in the making, a real inspiration, and one of the finest
people and songwriters I've ever run across. It's truly an
honour to speak with Eliza Gilkyson. Sure, we had a bit of
trouble connecting in the beginning, but that just meant extra
time to enjoy some of her amazing work.

Music makes me feel alright. Usually. I was tired and kind of
grumpy before the show began today, but a whole lot of great
music made all of the difference in the world. John Prentice
didnt make it in today, so that meant three hours of the best
therapy money cant buy. Late in hour 3, things turned for the
worse again, when we got a call from our old pal, talented local
singer/songwriter JP Hoe, who had all of his guitars stolen
after his gig at The Fringe Festival recently. The fact that
they were stolen from backstage, right behind JPs back
infuriated me more than these stories usually do, so I had to
put him on the air and find out what happened. Were gonna help
this future star get back on his feet one way or another. Stay
tuned for details

I've picked up TONS
of new stuff on my travels as of late, and have been lucky
enough to receive some great new releases from some fine labels
and artists, so it's time to go through a bunch of it and play
it on the show. A lot of wonderful and diverse music stretched
over 2 hours on a Sunday afternoon sounds pretty darned good to
me!
The show is pretaped (again) this week, as I'm off at the Regina

upcoming shows.

2:00-4:00 pm central time
I'm off at the
Hillside Festival in Guelph this week, so plenty of pre-taped
goodness on the show.
Hour 1 is almost entirely devoted to trying to convince you to
join me at The Regina Folk Fest next weekend. It should be a
great time, and if I can't convince you, an hour of great tunes
should do.
After 3, we feature a whole bunch of great new CDs that were
generously sent in by Red House Records. They're a fine roots
label and put out a lot of great things that I know you'll love,
as proven by over a half hour of music.
Then, a listen back to one of my favourite live guests, Josh
Ritter, who dropped by last October for a visit. He's in Guelph
this weekend and so am I, so I figured it was a good time to
revisit the interview. He came in and chatted and played a bunch
of songs live. If you missed it the first time, tune in again.
If you heard it before, well, it was that good that you should
tune in again.

A mixed bag today to
be certain.
First up, a long list of requests from one of our most dedicated
listeners, Allison in Victoria. She sent in a list of requests
that was so good, it made up the first hour of the show.
Then, a listen back to an interview that I did on Free Range
Radio back in August of 2003. Winnipeg's own Luke Doucet dropped
by to talk about his many, many projects and play us some new

Some kids get all excited and can't sleep a week before
Christmas. Me, I have no use for that over-commercialized
holiday, it's The Winnipeg Folk Fest that gets visions of new
CDs and Whales' Tails dancing in my head! I've been talking
about the festival for months it seems, and in a few short days
it'll be here. So what else could we talk about on the show
today but Folk Fest, Folk Fest, and more Folk Fest!
First up, a live in-studio visit from a dear friend who's
playing at Folk Fest this year, Cara "Lovely" Luft. She dropped
by to chat about life after the Wailin' Jennys and the many
things that are keeping her busy and excited these days.
Then, conversations with two first-time performers that I know
are going to find many new fans next weekend, Wayne "The Train"
Hancock and Jesse DeNatale.

check out some great music, and we just happen to have a few
songs written by, for, and about dads.

Mailbag Overfloweth!
Sunday, May 29, 2005
2:00-4:00 pm central time
When I started doing this show a few years ago, it was pretty
much a vanity project and nothing but. Sure, my goal was to give
some exposure to some artists who were very worthy, but unable
to get played anywhere else, but I never thought that it would
really work. Well, as the show has grown and evolved, it seems
that we've caught on and some folks are starting to see it as a
great way to get their music out to folks who might appreciate
it, and I've been lucky enough to have lots of wonderful artists
and labels send in music to be played on the show or reviewed by
this lowly second-rate music critic.
So much so, that it's been really hard to keep up with the
submissions. I've noticed for a while that there was a ton of
stuff I'd been meaning to play or even listen to, but I just
hadn't had the time or the occasion. Well, today, the mailbag
overflowith.
This was an opportunity to go through a whole bunch of stuff
that's come in over the past couple of years. Some of it I've
played before, some of it has been on the air on several
different occasions, but for the most part, all of it is
under-utilized and under-exposed.
Today's show was an attempt in some small part to do right by
some of the folks who have sent in CDs. I played as much as I
could. Some of it was wonderful, some weird, and some truly
terrible (Im not saying which is which). But that represents
what I have to deal with when putting together the show every
week. Plus, music appreciation is such a subjective thing, what
I think is worthy of airplay is not necessarily the same as what
all of the listeners would find to be worthy, so I tried to play
a little something for everyone.
In the end, I got through a small portion of the stuff I have
lying around. Someday, we'll get through the rest. Hopefully at
least we appeased the artists who made it to air this week.

That damn mother nature is so unreliable. Someone should have a
talk with her.
This weekend started off miserable and rainy. Saturday was
nothing but rain and cloud. I woke up Sunday and the weather
looked the same. More cloud. More rain. Looked at the ever so
reliable Environment Canada forecast, and it called for nothing
but rain all day. Not a "chance" of rain, but "showers."
Rather than let the rain get the best of us all, I decided to
fill our lives with some glorious rainy day music. All music
about the beauty of the rain. Yup.
Mother Nature heard about my plan and decided to mess with me.
The sun came out. Rain stopped.
I guess if you're
going to ruin a show, it might as well be with a little
sunshine. So the show became a proactive solution to future
rainy days. Oh well.

Pre-recorded.
There's
something so powerful about the way different voices can blend
into one sweet sound. And today, TTBTGH presents some of the
sweetest harmonies around.
First up, a visit by
my good friends, the internationally renowned, Juno award
winning Wailin' Jennys. They've come a long way in a short time,
and I've been along for the ride every step of the way. I've had
the pleasure of having the girls in a number of times, but this
was the first time with the new Jenny, Annabelle. We chatted
about the Juno, the past, the future, and even Disco Grover.
It's always a bit silly when the girls stop by, and this was
certainly no exception, but it was also very interesting and
enlightening also.
In hour 2, a look back at one of my favourite in-studio
interviews of all time. Last December Michael Johnston and Reid
Jamieson came in and totally wowed me. I was already a big fan
of them individually, so there was no reason to expect anything
to improve upon my already high opinion of them, but hearing the
way their voices blended was pure magic. In my eyes, this is a
combo that deserves to be recorded and heard by all, and even if
they don't make it onto CD in the near future, at least I have a
recording of their great live visit where they sang and played
and talked for almost a full hour, and in honour of Reid's
upcoming visit to Winnipeg, we took a listen back to this
magical appearance.

As much as I enjoyed
being part of the Juno celebrations and associated nonsense,
there were so many great Canadian musicians who went unnoticed.
This week, I featured a few folks who are surely award-winning
in my heart.

those together. He's quickly become a rising star in Canada, and
his new CD 100 is sure to raise his profile even |
