FAR & Away (Year-end FAR Report)

Who are we? Well…

Since 2002, Tell the Band to Go Home has aired Sundays at 2 pm central time on CJUM 101.5 UMFM, broadcasting live from the University of Manitoba, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. The show focuses on singer/songwriters by definition, but really, when you get down to it, we can make a case for playing just about anything (and regularly do). (see the About page for more history and info)

The show is hosted by Jeff Robson. Jeff has a life-long interest in radio, and as a kid, he wanted to be Howard Mandshein when he grew up. Ironically, one of his first responsibilities at UMFM when he joined the team in 2000 was to be the board operator for his idol on Monday Free Range Radio. Jeff eventually became a co-host of that show, before taking over Free Range Radio on Thursday nights, with various pals, some of whom have come and gone over the years (see www.steelbeltedradio.com for more information!) Jeff has hosted live events in and around Winnipeg, including stages at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, The River Barge Festival, and Trout Forest Music Festival, along with shows at The West End Cultural Centre, The Pyramid, and various events in his own living room, The Sunset Saloon!

Your taste in music is impeccible. You are the best radio host ever. But I still meant what I said about your friggin anger.

No joke, for sure. Tickets will be there for you at the Park. We’d love to see you come out!

My real name is Lloyd, but no one calls me that except the bank and CRA!

I think you should play some Little Miss Higgins. Slotted in as a blues artist, I think she falls into the roots/folk scene as well. Slaughter House is a good example.

    Cheers;
    Buzz

Further to Little Miss Higgins – a woman from the unknown town of Nokomis, Saskatchewan. Never been there, but I know where it is.

I was listening today and am in agreement about myspace. It used to be simple, but now…? I am getting to point if a group/artist doesn’t have a website, I pass them by.

Love Blackie coming to the fest. I hope the members do workshops. Blue Rodeo – if it is a nice night, probably, crappy weather – I’ll stay in the camper and drink!!

G’day,I caught your show for the first time 2 weekends ago.Very impressed. You did a segment on male and female artists, devoting equal time to each. There was a song you played, during the male artists from Texas.I believe the title was something like “Give it to me”.Any idea of who the artist was ? Thanks Roman Keep up the great work

    • Jeff says:

      Hi Roman,

I’m glad you found us. Thanks for stopping by the site. The song you’re looking for is by the great Rodney Crowell, it’s called “The Obscenity Prayer (Give It to Me)” and it’s from his album The Outsider. Dig it up, you’ll be glad you did.

Thanks, hope you tune in again,

      JR

I may have mentioned my not-so-secret crush on Ingrid Gatin. She’s playing at the Folk Exchange Oct. 1st. Hope to see you there! Bring your own Tin Heart.

    • Jeff says:

I would welcome the opportunity to meet up with you at a show, and I’m sure Ingrid is great, but the wisest of the wise will be at the Park Theatre for the James McMurtry show on Oct. 1!

Watching you watching James at the Park was Golden. You was moved son.
